Kenzo Tange and Associates won the project in a short international design competition. The purpose of the project was to build a new federal capital in Abuja, Nigeria. The site was considered to be the best place to geographically balance the three ethnic groups in the country and increase ethnic unity, while taking advantage of the development of the area behind it. The main structure of the project consists of a cultural axis that intersects the central urban axis, with its peak at the prominent rocky mountain, and residential areas around it.
